Balsall Heath Health Centre

The refurbished facility provides access to a range of primary and community care services, from physiotherapy and chiropody to community nursing and speech and language therapy and was part of HoBtPCT’s strategic aim to deliver health services closer to home. An existing GP practice – previously based in a converted residential property – has also been able to relocate to the centre, benefitting from the purpose-built, high quality facilities.

Maximising space utilisation To accommodate additional service provision there was a need to modernise and extend the 1980s-built premises. BaS LIFT’s specialist design team reconfigured the building’s existing physiotherapy suite, creating a series of multi-purpose clinical spaces that would increase capacity and provide greater flexibility in service offering. Transforming a redundant courtyard, the new physiotherapy suite provides a seamless link between the existing building and the new extension. Reconfiguration of the internal layout has enhanced the patient experience, improving patient confidentiality, while providing an easy to navigate flow throughout the building that helps reduce stress and anxiety. As an operational facility, the work required careful phasing to ensure minimum disruption. Despite the challenges of working within an existing structure, the work was completed within five months - from briefing to occupation.
